Herkimer Diamonds
Drusy is the formation of many tiny Herkimer Diamond Quartz Crystals that never left the host rock. This is the stones stage 1.
Many Crystals are still attached to their host rock, dolomite limestone. This specimen is referred to as a Matrix piece.
The last stage of the Herkimer Diamond is when it detaches from its host rock and is simply a double terminated Quartz Crystal already faceted by nature.
Herkimer Diamond quartz crystals are the oldest (over 500 million years old), clearest, and hardest (7.5 on the Mohs scale) of the quartz family.
Mined in Herkimer, New York, USA.
